Last Day of Winter, and some Blockchain basics

Howdy farmers, welcome to the Bumpkin’s Almanac, your daily digest for the #1 Web3 farming game, Sunflower Land. This issue is for Sunday, March 9th, 2025.

This game is a little different than other farming games that have been around the internet. Some of you may be old enough to remember Farmville, where you could spend real money to get boosts and cosmetics, but couldn’t ever earn anything back other than the prestige of having a cool farm. Well, the advent of blockchain technology makes that all completely different.

One of the best parts of Sunflower Land is that your progress and work is never really lost. Nearly everything in the game has a value, and can be bought and sold as needed. The crops you grow and the items you have on your farm can all be sold or given to another player, and you can turn that into money if you so choose.

Before we begin, please remember that in the next few months the game’s token, SFL, will be replaced with FLOWER. Currently the game relies on the Polygon blockchain, soon it will work on Ronin, Base, and others. While the names and the places may change, the ideas are all the same. And we begin, with logging in.

How you choose to log into the game is important, as it will be the method you use forever onwards. If you use an Ethereum-based wallet like Metamask, you can also sign in using another compatible wallet like Coinbase. The others are fixed to that protocol, so be sure you will always have access to that wallet. If you don’t currently have a Web3 wallet, use Google, and if you want one, use Sequence, which will set up a wallet for you.

Don’t worry about the other options for now

The first thing you’ll want to do when you start playing is mint your Farm’s NFT. You can do that from the game menu (Gear icon in lower-left, then three dots, then Blockchain Settings). This will create an address on the Polygon network that corresponds to your account, and will be where your resources are stored later on. You’ll need a small amount of POL to do this, make sure you have it in your own wallet beforehand. You can see mine here, if you want.

After that’s done, you can go to the menu’s Blockchain Settings and select Deposit, then transfer any resources you have in your personal wallet to your farm. You can buy Carrots, Wood, or Gold on marketplaces like OpenSea, Sequence Market, or MagicEden, using your own cryptocurrency, then use them in-game.

But why would you do that when you can just buy things on the Marketplace in the game? Well, due to the bot invasion we covered previously, the requirements for using the Marketplace have been raised, and at the lowest tier, players can only make 2 transactions per day. That would make fulfilling all of your requests a little difficult!

Not only that, but at the external marketplaces, you can actually buy resources in fractional amounts, unlike in-game, where you can only buy whole units. Need 0.2 Gold to craft something? (actual experience) Don’t start mining Iron, if you have some money you can get exactly as much as you need. Also notice that the different marketplaces use different tokens, and Sequence lets you trade directly in SFL. Finally, the fees for every marketplace are different. Using the in-game system is very convenient, they take 10% off the top. Do your research and find what works best for you!

Also, if you start moving things around between wallets, you’ll likely see something like this. Don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that you’re getting 101 hextillion, 500 quintillion Sunflowers. This is how the collection deals with fractional amounts. This transaction would actually get you 101.500000000000000000 Sunflowers. All the zeroes are there!

That’s all for today! Tomorrow we’ll cover some more. Subscribe via email or RSS to make sure you never miss an issue. Be well, do good work, and farm on.
